On December 30, 1995, Pierre Hostettler, on vacation in Pompano Beach, Florida, saved his father from drowning after he was carried about fifty metres out to sea by high waves. On hearing his father's cries for help, Mr. Hostettler rushed into the water and fought the heavy undertow until he finally managed to reach him. Despite being constantly pushed out to sea by the waves, he strove to keep his semi-conscious father above water. Although overcome by exhaustion, he succeeded in bringing the victim to within about ten metres of the shore, where he handed him over to other persons who had come to help.
