On June 19, 1996, off-duty Metro Toronto Police Cst. Patricia Latone rescued a distraught woman who had climbed onto the outer edge of an overpass bridge in Toronto, Ontario. Cst. Latone was walking her dogs when she observed a woman climb over the railing of the viaduct. She made her way to her and attempted to dissuade her to jump. Determined to end her life, the victim pushed herself off but Cst. Latone managed to grab hold of the heavier woman. The two balanced precariously in this position until Cst. Latone succeeded, despite the woman's struggles, in pulling her back over the ledge. She then held the agitated victim down until help arrived.
