On May 2, 1996, Ronald Clark saved an elderly man from a house fire in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Mr. Clark was driving by with his wife when he saw the fire and rushed to the scene. Unable to penetrate the wall of thick black smoke that blocked the front entrance, he raced around the house past exploding windows and crawled in through a back door. Guided by vocal contact with his wife who remained outside, Mr. Clark searched for the occupant, calling to him and urging him to come towards his voice. When the victim's hand brushed the side of his head, Mr. Clark grabbed him by the arm and tried to pull him down for air but the disoriented victim refused to move. Despite the intense heat, Mr. Clark continued coaxing the man until he succeeded in leading him out to safety.
