Gregory Kroone, M.B.
Medal of Bravery
Ten-year-old Greg Kroone saved the life of his nine-year-old friend who fell through the ice in the Galop Canal near Cardinal, Ontario, on March 31, 1971. The mishap occurred when the youths were sliding in cardboard boxes, down the canal bank. Because the snow was higher than the coping on top of the wall, the boy slid over and into the canal. He stood up but immediately broke through the ice into twenty feet of water. Displaying great presence of mind, Greg Kroone crawled out on the surface of the ice until he reached his friend. He grabbed the child and pulled him from the water. Rescuer and victim then cautiously returned to the embankment, both boys shaken by an experience which would likely have ended in tragedy had it not been for Greg Kroone's brave act.
