On September 18, 1996, in Gibsons, British Columbia, 15-year-old Carly Webster rescued a woman from the unprovoked attack of a man mentally-disabled who was exhibiting extremely aggressive behaviour. After numerous violent outbursts in the neighbourhood on that day, the man inexplicably attacked a woman, hitting her several times and knocking her to the ground. She managed to run away but after banging in vain on several doors for help, she was cornered by the attacker. Carly had just returned home from school when she heard the woman's screams. She rushed to the victim who was frozen by fear, grabbed her by the hand and managed to pull her away from the man. With the aggressor close behind uttering disjointed threats, Carly led the victim in a frantic race to her house and locked all the doors behind them. While the man continued to threaten them from outside, Carly's mother called the police.
