In the evening of 24 April, 1985, Cst. Stephen Roden of the Iroquois detachment rescued an 82- year-old man trapped in the kitchen of his burning house. Cst. Roden was on plain clothes assignment, operating an unmarked vehicle, when he noticed flames coming out of a residence. He stopped and, without hesitation, dashed into the building engulfed in flames. He found the disoriented man and dragged the resisting victim outside to safety. He then re-entered the house and, forced to his knees by intense smoke and heat, crawled along the hallway in search of other possible victims. Although suffering from smoke inhalation, Cst. Roden satisfied himself that the house was empty before staggering through the front door and away from the inferno.
