In the dark hours of 24 October 1982, Laura Lee Horner was alerted that a truck had accidentally rolled into the deep waters of Cowan Lake and that three of its occupants could not swim. Without a moment's hesitation, Miss Horner ran to the wharf and dove into the cold water, unfortunately striking her head on a floating piece of wood. Although she felt dizzy and had a deep cut on her forehead, she swam the ten metres to the sinking vehicle. She reached two youths clinging to a spare tire, their heads barely above water. Physically weakened but determined to save their lives, she towed them back to shore. At the same time she urged the third youth, supporting himself with another spare tire, to paddle to shore, which he did.
