On September 27, 1993, WO Johnson risked his life to rescue a wounded French soldier from a heavily mined area south of Medak, Croatia. WO Johnson was part of a three-man patrol who responded to a report about a wounded peacekeeper trapped in a mine field. Despite darkness, driving rain and strong winds, the patrol reached the heavily mined area, only to be greeted by small arms and machine gun fire as a result of mistaken identity. Although the patrol had been ordered to abandon the rescue attempt because of the high degree of danger, WO Johnson convinced his patrol commander to persevere. He then led the way into the minefield, cutting trip wires to the mines to clear a path to the wounded soldier.
