In the afternoon of 6 July 1981, twenty-one-year-old Alexander Lim drowned in an unsuccessful attempt to save his friend at Cultus Lake Provincial Park, in British Columbia. A group of restaurant employees were on an outing when three teenagers decided to paddle a canoe on the lake. The canoe suddenly overturned and the trio of non-swimmers fell into wind-swept waters. Mr. Lim was among several who witnessed the boating accident from shore and tried to rescue the panic- stricken youths. Though a poor swimmer, he entered the water at once and swam the twenty-five metres to the canoe. Tired from his efforts, and untrained in rescue techniques, he was unable to overcome the woman's struggling and both went under.
