Star of Courage
In the early hours of 1 August 1980 Cst. Bruce Norman and Cst. Charles Reed of the Metropolitan Toronto Police Department, who were on routine patrol duty at the time, saw flames coming from a house. After they had radioed an alarm, Cst. Norman forced open the front door. At the rear of the building he found a woman in a state of shock. Once outside, she told them that her husband was still in the apartment. Without the aid of breathing apparatus in the dense smoke, Cst. Reed entered the building. But while leading the man to safety, he fell and struck his head. Although the fire was raging out of control Cst. Norman re-entered, heard cries for help and at great risk rescued the two before the arrival of the firemen.
