Star of Courage
The combined and valiant efforts of Csts. John Robins and Ian Haimes of the Winnipeg Police Department saved a woman, aged 70, from a fire that destroyed her home on 10 January 1980. While on night patrol, the officers observed the house on fire and people escaping from the dwelling. They were told that a woman was trapped inside. Cst. Robins then ran to the door, which he kicked open. At that moment, the roof burst into flames, the fire being at its height. Courageously, in spite of thick smoke pouring out, the rescuer crawled in the house on hands and knees, located the unconscious woman lying on the floor and pulled her towards the door. Overcome by smoke, he had to leave her and exit to obtain fresh air. Then Cst. Haimes, in turn, went into the building and dragged the victim to the door where both men were able to carry her to safety. Cst. Haimes revived her and gave her first aid. The victim received very severe burns but her life was spared by the unselfish efforts of the two constables.
