Valentine Campbell removed two persons from the wreckage of a car following an accident in Ottawa on July 2, 1978. The vehicle had slid several metres, rolled over and struck a post. Valentine heard the crash and went to the scene with her mother. There they found two men trapped and fire breaking out in the front of the car. They returned to their house for a fire extinguisher, telephoned police, then returned to the scene. The extinguisher proved inadequate against the blaze, but despite the flames and risk of explosion, Valentine pulled both passengers out of a window seconds before the flames engulfed the car. An ambulance shortly came on the scene, and the men were rushed to hospital.
