Capt. The Rev. William MacLennan, a chaplain at CFB Gagetown, New Brunswick, pacified and disarmed a distraught man on the base on 26 April 1977. The man had been threatening to shoot anyone who approached and then to commit suicide. At the risk of being killed or severely wounded Capt. MacLennan engaged the man in conversation in his married quarters, urging medical attention and undertaking to accompany him to hospital. Arrangements were successfully made, the man was disarmed, and both departed by helicopter for Halifax.
