On July 5, 1996, Security Officer Amanda Patenaude rescued an abducted woman who was being stabbed by the step-father of her estranged husband in a parking garage, in Regina, Saskatchewan. Alerted that a man was beating and sexually assaulting a woman in a van, Mrs. Patenaude immediately raced to the scene and called 911. As the man began slashing the victim with a knife, Mrs. Patenaude repeatedly struck the windows of the van with her radio until the back one finally broke. She leaned inside and tried to reach the aggressor. When the man turned to confront her, she yelled at the victim to grab the weapon. Although weak, the victim managed to seize the knife by the blade and to throw it out the window. Mrs. Patenaude gained access to the vehicle and handcuffed the aggressor.
