Medal of Bravery
Despite Amelia Cameron and Murray Hanlon's best efforts to save him, 48-year-old Howard Morash drowned on August 31, 1997, while attempting to rescue his friend, Miss Cameron's father, from the high surf of the Northumberland Strait at Black Point, Pictou County, Nova Scotia. The man had been swimming when a strong undertow began pulling him towards the open sea. Hearing his cries for help, Mr. Morash and Ms. Cameron ran into the water and, with high waves crashing over their heads, started swimming towards him. As he neared his friend, Mr. Morash was caught in a powerful current and dragged under the surface. Meanwhile, Ms. Cameron was able to reach her father and bring him towards shore where Mr. Hanlon helped take him to safety. Although exhausted, Mr. Hanlon re-entered the rough surf, swam to Mr. Morash and helped other rescuers drag him to shore. Sadly, the victim could not be revived.
