On February 1, 1972 at St. George, Ontario, Ludwig Raepple went to the aid of a three-year-old child who had fallen through the ice-covered surface of a slough and was in danger of drowning. When he saw the child struggling to stay afloat, the rescuer, in complete disregard of his own safety, plunged into the frigid water. He brought the victim, who had lost consciousness, to the edge of the pond where both were helped up the bank. Without Ludwig Raepple's prompt and courageous action, the child would not have survived.
