On October 16, 1971 at Fort MacMurray, Alberta, Robert Rempel disarmed a man who had seriously wounded an R.C.M.P. officer. Robert Rempel had been stopped by the officer when the constable's suspicions were aroused by the actions of the driver of another car. Approaching the vehicle, the constable noticed that the driver was holding a gun. The car was driven off but returned a few minutes later and rammed the back of the police cruiser. When the officer drew his revolver the driver of the vehicle shot him in the arm. The constable tried to recover his pistol and was wounded a second time. He nevertheless succeeded in firing in the direction of his assailant. Then, as the man prepared to reload, Robert Rempel crept up behind him and knocked him to the ground. Wresting the rifle from his grasp, Mr. Rempel struck the man again and threatened him while another police officer came on the scene.
