For five hours on March 4, 1972, Private Peter Albert Maillet of CFB Gagetown, New Brunswick, faced a would-be suicide brandishing a shotgun. Because he thought that the daughter of the distraught serviceman was in danger, Pte Maillet entered the house in an attempt to persuade the man to give up the weapon. His entrance was marked by a shotgun blast which fortunately did not strike him. During the ensuing ordeal, Pte Maillet remained cool and collected in these threatening circumstances and in the end he succeeded with the help of a chaplain in overcoming the man and taking charge of the firearm.
