On 23 October 1977 Todd MacKay, aged ten, rescued his three-year-old brother from a twenty-seven-inch culvert near their home. The child had been playing with other children when he fell from the top of the culvert and was drawn in by the current. Todd, who was nearby, jumped down and grasped him but could not pull him out. The other youngsters left to seek help, and by the time their father arrived on the scene, both boys had been carried some four hundred feet along. Todd had tried to grip the sides of the culvert but found it painful because of the tar coating. They finally got their footing in the mud below a manhole and were found clinging to one another when their father lifted the lid.
