Robert Longdo made a valiant attempt to rescue the lives of a family who were trapped in their station wagon following a three-car collision near Princeton on 15 July 1975. The station wagon had fallen into a ditch and rolled on its side. When Robert Longdo and other motorists approached it moments later, they found all eight members of the family still inside, but with only one showing signs of life. Gasoline was spilling from the broken tank and electric wires were sparking. Mr. Longdo attempted to switch off the ignition but could not reach the keys. At a very considerable risk to his life he entered the car and strained to free the lone survivor but to no effect. When the gasoline was about to explode, he had to leave. Within seconds the car was in flames, and nothing could be done to save the family.
