In the early morning hours of October 3, 1990, Mr. Lloyd saved two people from a burning house in Ottawa, Ontario, and lost his life in an attempt to rescue a third. Waking to find the two-storey house in which he was residing on fire, he immediately alerted the other occupants, who attempted to leave by the staircase. However, flames could be seen below and smoke came billowing up, forcing them to retreat. Mr. Lloyd led the group to a bedroom where they could escape onto a small roof covering the front entrance. While he was assisting them onto the roof, one of the children became lost. Despite the thickening smoke, Mr. Lloyd re-entered the house to find the little girl. Tragically, the two perished in the fire.
