On the evening of 2 September 1983, OS. Daniel Lepage of HMCS Skeena, rescued a local resident, a thirteen-year-old boy, from the freezing harbour waters of Julianehab, in Qoqortoq, Greenland. While standing watch, OS. Lepage saw the boy fall into the narrow space between the ship and the jetty. Ignoring the obvious perils - the crashing waves pushing the Skeena against the wharf in the settling darkness - he jumped into the icy water. Reaching below the surface, he found the young boy in great danger of drowning or succumbing to hypothermia. OS. Lepage kept the boy afloat supporting his head until help arrived.
