Cpl. Bernard Lemay rescued a woman from a burning house in Westmount, Quebec, on 30 May 1975. He had stopped his car on seeing smoke coming from the house and was told by a young boy that his grandmother was in bed on the top floor. Cpl. Lemay groped his way up through dense smoke and at first failed to find the woman. Then, after catching a breath of air, he heard her cries, forced a locked door and felt his way until he reached the victim who by then was unconscious on the floor. He carried her out and took her to hospital. Sadly, she died a few days later.
