Pierre Labbé saved a boy from drowning in the Chaudière River at Beauceville on 5 July 1979. The child had been playing in the water about ten metres from shore with an eight-year-old brother, and both had fallen into a deep hole in the river. Their cries were heard by a resident in the vicinity, who in turn called to Mr. Labbé for help. The latter ran some three hundred and fifty metres to the river's edge and plunged fully clothed and wearing heavy boots. He swam out to the older boy and, though exhausted, managed to tow him to shore. Efforts were made to save the younger child but he was drowned.
