On 2 April 1978, at Stirling, Ontario, Paul Labbie, then aged nine, saved a seven-year-old girl from drowning. She had been walking on a frozen creek and had broken through. Paul heard her cries and in spite of the risk to himself entered the freezing water and grasped her just as she was being drawn downstream. He brought her to firm ice, where another boy helped to lift her out of the creek. But for his prompt response the child would almost certainly have drowned.
