Constable Murray Douglas Kilshaw, S.C.
Star of Courage
Lyle Barr and Police Cst. Murray Kilshaw rescued three young people from a car which had crashed into a tree and burst into flames at Saanich on 13 January 1979. Having seen the speeding car with its five passengers, Mr. Barr ran to the wreckage, and though he emptied one extinguisher the fire raged out of control. A few moments later Cst. Kilshaw arrived and after failing to put the fire out with a second extinguisher broke the rear window; but none of the occupants could be taken out through the opening. At grave risk the rescuers then freed one victim through a side window and removed another from the front seat. When firemen arrived, a third was taken out alive, but the remaining two perished.
