In the morning of 27 February 1979, Fire Chief Robert Kibbins risked his life by entering a burning house alone. A fellow firefighter had cried for help after explosion had damaged his breathing apparatus and trapped him inside the house. Fire Chief Kibbins then donned respiratory protection equipment, went in, and managed to pull the victim out through heavy smoke. Had it not been for this devotion to duty on the part of the Fire Chief, the man would have perished.
