Medal of Bravery
On 26 November 1982, in Alberta, William Dobson and Charlie Moon made a brave attempt to save a man who had collapsed in a natural gas line vault. The man was overcome by fumes after he had entered the vault to purge the gas line. Knowing the extreme danger - the hissing sound of gas, escaping from the valve was obvious to everyone - Mr. Dobson climbed down the ladder without hesitation in an attempt to turn it off and to rescue his fellow worker. Seconds later, he too was overcome and fell on top of the first victim. In response to an emergency call, another man rushed to the scene and succeeded in closing the valve. Mr. Dobson was pulled from the vault unconscious but soon recovered. Meanwhile, aware that residual gas in the enclosed area created a grave risk, but concerned for the safety of the other victim, Mr. Moon lowered himself into the vault. With the help of the other man, Mr. Moon carried the victim up the ladder. Unfortunately, efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
