On 19 June 1976, at Marshville, Nova Scotia, Albert Mertin pulled a man from his burning car moments before the fuel tank exploded. The man had been driving home from work when his station wagon struck a utility pole, overturned in a ditch and burst into flames. Mr. Mertin, who had witnessed the mishap from his car, stopped and found the victim unable to escape from the vehicle because of a broken leg. He grasped the man's hand through the broken windshield and pulled him out of the car and on to the road. Shortly thereafter the gas tank exploded and the wreckage was totally engulfed in flames.
