Cpl. John Robert Meads of the Canadian Forces base Comox in British Columbia helped a nineteen- year-old woman off the Angus L. MacDonald Bridge in Halifax, Nova Scotia on 9 October 1975. The distraught woman had climbed a suspension wire. The crowd which had gathered tried to persuade her to come down, but she refused and only went further along the bridge. When Cpl. Meads came on the scene he climbed to a point above her and, perched in a precarious position, spoke gently to her for several minutes. He was finally able to win her confidence, and she consented to come down. With great care, because of a high wind, he took hold of her and ensured her safe descent.
