Police Cst. Timothy McQuade received severe burns to his hands and face as he rescued a man from a fire at Dunnville on 2 November 1978. While on patrol Mr. McQuade and another officer had seen smoke escaping from the third floor of a building and had climbed up a fire-escape. Mr. McQuade traced a noise through several floors to a corridor where he found the sole occupant lying on the floor. The man was helped to his feet, and as the two made their way to a stairway, fire shot out of a doorway and inflicted severe burns on them. Cst. McQuade persisted and they escaped from the building.
