In the afternoon of 13 May 1981, in Sherwood Park, Alberta, Cst. John McIntyre of the Sherwood Park Detachment, was summoned to the scene of an accident. Two men were lying face-down in a six-metre well containing a mixture of gas and water. Cst. McIntyre donned a gas mask, not knowing that it would be ineffective in enclosed areas where the normal oxygen supply has been depleted, and tied a rope around his waist. He then instructed the people gathered about to lower him onto the gas- filled well. Unsuccessful on the first attempt, he climbed down a second time and, while trying to remove the victims, became dizzy. He was pulled from the well unconscious, but soon recovered. His actions were an inspiration to all about him.
