Medal of Bravery
On September 5, 1994, Csts. Fleurant and Rioux of the Ste-Adèle police department in Quebec helped save a suicidal man and his child from a burning apartment. Responding to a call, they learned that a man was striking matches in his apartment, which was filled with gasoline fumes. The officers immediately evacuated the building, and a fire broke out shortly after. Breaking down the door, they got the unstable man out and then returned to look for the baby, whom they found on their second try. A sudden backdraft threw Cst. Rioux down the stairs, enveloped Cst. Fleurant and knocked the infant from their arms. Fortunately, the two officers managed to escape the inferno and the baby was saved.
