On December 3, 1994, in Hamilton, Ontario, Mr. Bassi came to the aid of a woman who was being savagely attacked by a man with a machete. After the assailant knocked the woman to the ground and began slashing her repeatedly, Mr. Bassi, a passing motorist, confronted him, yelling at him to stop. The man swung the machete at him in response. While one man grabbed the attacker from behind, Mr. Bassi and other passers-by tackled him to the ground, holding him until the police arrived. Tragically, the woman did not survive.
