Medal of Bravery
Shortly before 1:00 p.m. on November 18, 1984, Diane Keefe and Donna Marszowski saved a six-year-old boy from drowning in the Kenogamisis River at Longlac, Ontario. Donna Marszowski's son ran to Diane Keefe's house yelling that the boy had fallen into the river. Telling him to get his mother, Diane Keefe grabbed a 2 x 4 and rushed to the shore, followed closely by Donna Marszowski and her son. The boy was spotted floating down river with only the cuffs of his coat and pants visible above the surface. The two women crawled on the thin ice to the open water where Donna was able to grip the victim by the arm. After a great deal of effort, she managed to pull him out of the frigid water and to slide him toward Diane, who dragged him to safety. The boy had turned blue and Diane endeavoured to revive him, applying mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. An ambulance took him to the hospital where he recovered from his ordeal.
