On the morning of 16 March 1984, the exemplary actions of Correctional Officer William Marshall saved a fellow-worker from fatal wounds at the Millhaven Maximum Security Penitentiary in Kingston, Ontario. Mr. Marshall and another correctional Off. were escorting an inmate to the infirmary. In compliance with a routine procedure, they ordered him against the wall to be searched before entering the premises. Unexpectedly, the inmate pulled a knife from his clothing, turned and lunged at the staff member, inflicting several stab wounds. Mr. Marshall, concerned for the life of his co-worker, rushed forward and tackled the aggressor. Risking his own life, he managed to distract the man until reinforcements arrived. Mr. Marshall sustained multiple lacerations to the upper body.
