On 5 November 1977 Godfrey Savage rescued a man who was overcome by smoke and suffered severe burns during a fire in a house where both men were tenants. Mr. Savage saw smoke rising through his kitchen floor and at once obtained the keys to the victim's apartment. When Mr. Savage entered the man's flat, he crouched on the floor, then carefully made his way through the heat and smoke. He found him lying unconscious and pulled him by the leg out of the building.
