On 12 April 1982, Philip Joseph Sauvé was awakened by his wife's screams that the house was on fire. Realizing that the downstairs offered no hope of safe exit, Mr. Sauvé broke the bedroom window and lowered his wife to the ground. Then, with safety a short jump away, he turned into the dense smoke to find their two-year-old son. Witnesses saw him reappear at the window with the baby in his arms, and saw him collapse before he could pass the child outside. Both perished.
