Although disabled, Mrs. Maude Saunders saved her husband and two grandchildren from a fiery death on March 19, 1984. A few seconds after Mrs. Saunders discovered the fire, the flames had spread across the entire ceiling of the kitchen and the entrance area, which was the only means of escape. Thinking quickly, she went to the living room, wrapped a two-month-old in a quilt and took hold of a four-year-old's hand. Her disabled husband refused to leave. By that time, smoke had completely filled the kitchen so Mrs. Saunders, holding the baby on one arm, placed the boy in front of her and dragged her husband out moments before flames engulfed the entire house.
