Marcus Jopp and Eugene Santos combined efforts to rescue a man from the burning wreckage following a traffic accident near Revelstoke. Late on the afternoon of 14 October 1983, a truck collided with a car. Both vehicles caught fire on impact. Motoring on the highway, Messrs. Jopp and Santos stopped, ran to the scene of the accident and discovered that the truck driver was dead. Looking through the broken windshield they saw a man trapped inside his car, trying to brush flames from himself and his unconscious wife. Without hesitating and undeterred by heavy smoke and intense heat, the two rescuers forced open the passenger door. They pulled the man out and extinguished the flames on his clothes, then carried him a safe distance away. Messrs. Jopp and Santos ran back to the car in an attempt to rescue the man's wife but the wreck was totally engulfed, precluding any further action.
