At Lake Echo, Nova Scotia, in the mid-afternoon of Sunday 22 March 1981, a local resident, David Kay, saved a three-year-old girl from drowning. When alerted by cries for help, the child's mother realized that her daughter was in imminent danger of drowning and burst into the Kays' house. Apprised of the situation, Mr. Kay ran in the direction of the lake where he saw the victim, her head barely above water. Breaking the ice with his bare hands as he pulled himself forward, he then swam the remaining distance and grasped the child just as she sank below the surface. Soon after he returned the little girl to her parent's waiting arms. Because of Mr. Kay's prompt action a young life was spared.
