On 4 August 1978, Henry Kanouse rescued a woman from a burning car which had rolled down an embankment near Lytton. The car had gone out of control, turned over and come to rest a few metres from the bottom of a gully. Mr. Kanouse, hearing the crash, went to the car and found the woman trapped by the seat belt. He struggled to release her; and the belt was eventually cut by others who came to his aid. Through his initiative and persistence the woman was taken out of the car only moments before it was destroyed by fire.
