On 24 February 1980, Karen Jones then 12-years-old, saved her four-year-old brother and his 2½- year-old friend from drowning at Moreton's Harbour, Newfoundland. The two children had been playing in a boat on the shore. When it was discovered that they were no longer in sight Karen was sent to look for them. She spotted them in four feet of water that was covered with slob ice. Without thought for her own safety she rushed in and supporting herself with one arm on the hard surface, pulled the two children closer to her, then climbed onto the ice where she lifted them to safety. Both youngsters were unconscious on arrival at the local clinic but regained consciousness after receiving first aid.
