John Phillip Hiram, M.B. RCMP Constable Richard Wilhelm Krenz, M.B. Medal of Bravery John Hiram, then aged seventeen, and Cst. Richard Krenz saved a man from drowning on 12 October 1979. The man was the sole survivor when a light aircraft crashed in thick fog at Howe Sound, near Squamish. John Hiram and Cst. Krenz, who were tending crab traps in a canoe not far away, found the victim struggling to stay afloat. Unable to lift him into their small craft, they towed him to a log boom; but as they headed for shore the canoe capsized. Then, after they had fitted the man with a life-jacket, Cst. Krenz towed him to safety, while Mr. Hiram swam ashore.
