On 4 March 1975, a blind woman found herself on the wrong platform of a Toronto Subway station. When a train pulled into the opposite platform, she mistakenly stepped forward to board it and fell on the tracks. As she struggled to her feet and tried to climb back on the platform she was seen by the nineteen-year-old David Herrett. He went to her help just as a train approached the station. Grasping her under the arms, he lifted her up and the train missed both of them by inches. But for his cool-headed action, the woman would surely have been killed.
