On 10 August 1984, during the evening, James Haney rescued the five passengers of a motor boat that had overturned in Lake Vernon, Ontario. When he arrived at the scene, Mr. Haney first ensured that three of the victims floundering near the wreck were in no immediate danger. He then dove beneath the surface in search of a child and his grandfather, trapped in the cabin of the boat. After repeated dives, all made at risk to himself, he found the panicky child in an air pocket, pulled him through a small window and brought him to the surface. Knowing that his grandson was safe, the remaining victim freed himself and swam up. James Haney helped all five into his own boat and took them ashore.
