On 20 May 1980, Jean Grandmaison participated in the rescue of three co-workers stranded by a mud slide at Level 350 of Belmoral Mine. When escaping the fast-moving two-metre slide. Mr. Grandmaison suggested to his companion that they should go back to shut off the motors of the scoop trams. They then realized that there were men in the lunch-room. Unconcerned for his own safety, Mr. Grandmaison moved one scoop tram to enable his companion to manoeuvre the other across the ramp leading to the lunch-room. The three miners jumped on to the back of Mr. Grandmaison's tram which quickly crossed the ramp through the sliding mud. Moments later they climbed up the emergency exit to safety. The other man's body was recovered two weeks later at the site of the cave-in.
