In the early hours of Christmas Day 1981, Robert Girardeau saved the lives of an expectant mother and her husband. While walking his dog in the neighbourhood, Mr. Girardeau saw smoke rising from the roof of a house. Finding the front of the house in flames, he proceeded to the rear, forced open a back door and, without thought of his own safety, entered. Crawling through heavy smoke he reached a third-floor apartment; although his cries remained unanswered Mr. Girardeau went inside and found the couple in a daze. He led them to the exit moments before the fire made escape impossible.
