Gordon Fuller saved a woman whose car plunged into the Delisle River near Valleyfield, Quebec, on 24 June, 1975. Mr. Fuller witnessed the accident and after removing his clothing dived into the river. The vehicle settled three feet below the surface, and the unconscious woman was found half- out of the driver's window. Feeling his way in the murky water, the rescuer pulled her above water to the top of the car and revived her with artificial respiration. Moments later, when a bystander swam to the car to help, Mr. Fuller dived in search of other possible occupants but none were found. The group was then joined by a local resident who brought everyone ashore in a rowboat.
