On 7 August 1979, Jane Fleming saved her two-year old nephew from injury during a tornado at Woodstock, Ontario. Seeing the tornado gathering while she drove along a country road, she at once backed the car into a lane and carried the child to a house. The owners tried to let them in but could not open the door because of winds of hundred miles an hour. Jane then found shelter for the boy and herself under a porch, but hearing a cracking noise she leaned out and was caught up in the tornado. With her right arm broken in her fall, she managed to set her nephew down away from her so that he should not see her injuries. He came through the ordeal unscathed but she was treated for multiple arm injuries and had a leg amputated.
